Different Types of COVID Testing

In 2019, an unknown virus that causes flu-like symptoms, pneumonia, and death started spreading in Wuhan, China. Later on, it was found out that the virus came from the coronavirus family, and it was known as the Novel coronavirus or more commonly known as COVID-19. The virus was highly contagious, and it spread across the globe quickly.

As each country continues to think of ways to battle out COVID, the number of cases keeps increasing. In response to the rising number of virus infections, numerous governments mandated lockdowns and closing of their borders. Apart from this, protocols such as wearing masks, staying at home, closing all leisure activities and shops that are not deemed essential were imposed.

With the continuous research done by the medical experts, they were able to come up with several tests that can be used to determine whether or not a person is infected with the virus. Through these testings, healthcare workers could identify and help patients get better even before their situation became severe. Also, the tests have helped in determining the rates of infections, recovery, and mortality.

Some of these tests include the Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR testing. The PCR test is used to directly screen for the presence of viral RNA, which will be detectable before the body forms antibodies or the symptoms of the present disease. Primarily, this test is utilised to tell whether a person has contacted the virus or not within the early stage.

PCR testing is the most commonly used method all over the world. However, this test usually takes at least 3-days before getting the results. So in case you are in a rush to get your COVID results, this may come as a hassle for you. With that being said, another COVID test guarantees a faster result and at least 99% accuracy, and that is the rapid antigen test for travel. The rapid antigen test involves rubbing a long cotton bud (swab) inside your nose or over your tonsils and the inside of your nose.

Lastly, some countries have centres where people can book and take a fit to fly COVID test. This test is primarily for people who need to travel and find taking the tests time-consuming. If you take this test, the booked centre will automatically email you with your results and fit to fly certificate if you tested negative with COVID. You can then show this email to the airport as proof that you are good to go.
